Good afternoon everyone,
I hope you are all having a great Sun-yay. Today my partner and I have been slowly piecing together our new home whilst fighting back the flu. My partner, the poor thing, has been feeling terrible the last couple of days.
I wanted to sit down and talk with you all about something that genuinely bothers me. This day and age, we are lacking the support from one another. We choose competition over gratitude and “good sport”. These days, we trash talk one another and forget that the other person right in front of you is exactly that – a person. Not an object.
Yesterday when I was at the shopping centre, my partner was a sweetheart and treated me to getting my nails done. I usually grow very sick of having my nails done and want them off within days – but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the time of pampering. I tried to talk to the lady doing my nails, but I get very shy and socially awkward. At one point, she told me to relax – I didn’t even realise how tense I was! However, as we gradually spoke some more, I was listening to her about how she recently gave birth to her son and her journey throughout that and how she had a horrible time with her pregnancy due to nausea and what not. She was very open and I felt comfortable to ask questions and just getting to know her. After a while, she brought up how she believed I was a kind person and she was almost outstounded by how friendly I was coming across – this confused me, because she was saying her general customers are very rude to her and her staff. I wanted to know more, however it showed within minutes. A lady next to me selected a colour she wanted for her nails, the staff member painted one of her nails and the lady abruptly said “‘No, that’s disgusting. Take it off.” no thank you or sorry, just bluntly right out there. That was only one comment, probably out of a whole day working there – I can only imagine the kind of people you come across. Just because you are a paying customer, doesn’t mean the person right in front of you is beneath you. They are a human just like you, just doing their job however they have a family, a story, a whole world behind their customer facing role. It doesn’t give you any right to treat them less than what you would like to be treated.
Now, that was just an example I wanted to put across. My main reasoning for this post is that I want us all to look into our prior memories and see if you can pin point a moment where you felt like you were put in a position like this. Where someone has made you feel taken aback, less than they were, or even just where you felt like you were put into a competition when you wanted to be fair and have a good spirit in the situation.
Something about myself – I always love noticing changes about people and complimenting the adjustments they have made. Whether that is wearing a different shirt to what they would normally wear, new shoes, maybe a different hair colour or even if they seem more vibrant than usual – maybe they are having a great day, and I like to compliment their spirit or whatever changes I can notice. Usually this is taken really well and it places a smile on their face.
In my new role, I have been tested on a lot of information I have learnt, some tests I have failed. To be honest I have failed quite a lot. There is a lady who is with me in these tests who is doing incredibly well, even when I fail I like to congratulate her as well as help her where I can – even if I’m not sure about what she needs help with! She doesn’t return any of my gestures, and to be honest I don’t mind. Because I know that I’m trying my best to be the best that I can be.
I wish a lot of people would reach out, be kind and be positive. Help people where you can, because it’s genuinely appreciated by many. I remember so many kind gestures people have done for me, it follows me for my entire journey in life. Being kind takes a flick of a switch, kind words travel far.
Support one another, be there for each other and ensure no one battles life alone. If you see someone running around like a headless chicken, check up on them and see if there is anything you can do for them. Speak out, and reach out. You will be outstounded by the changes it would make in this day in age – it is rare to come across.
Nothing is a competition. We are all on the same path for a happy life. We are all equals.
